The Next Evolution of IndeVets
It’s easy to settle into a comfortable rut. Exploring what else might exist can feel overwhelming, especially with everything else going on in your life.
Then something makes the rut uncomfortable. A new boss. A new teammate. A new EMR. New expectations. And suddenly you’re looking around, wondering if there’s something better out there.
Many vets aren’t actively looking for something new. But are a lot of us settling for “good enough” to avoid the discomfort of exploring what’s possible? Honestly, I think the answer is yes.
So here’s what IndeVets actually is, what’s changed, and why I believe it matters.
A Career With More Control
IndeVets has always offered a different kind of veterinary career. Over the past year, we’ve made some of the biggest changes in our company’s history, all with one goal in mind: helping veterinarians build careers that feel more sustainable.
The most significant change is our scheduling model.
Today, doctors choose how many days they want to work, from one to five, and the specific days of the week that work best for them. From there, a dedicated Scheduling Coordinator builds each schedule around those preferences, along with favorite hospitals, clinical strengths, and practice style.
The model also introduced guaranteed base salaries tied to each doctor’s chosen schedule. Doctors are W-2 employees with a predictable paycheck every two weeks, plus health insurance, liability insurance, a 401(k), and other benefits.
Together, those changes give doctors something many have been asking for: more control over their time and income without giving up the stability of a W-2 career.
Doctors know their schedules months in advance, which makes it easier to plan appointments, family commitments, childcare, and everything else that happens outside the clinic. And when doctors choose to work beyond their salaried schedule, they have the opportunity to earn more.
We also added paid floating holidays for doctors in our three-, four-, and five-day programs, which can be used on any scheduled workday during a week with an observed company holiday.
And through PTO Power Ups, doctors who work extra shifts beyond their salaried hours can choose additional pay or bank extra PTO for a longer vacation or more time with family.
Those things are important. But they are not the whole story.
The bigger story is what they make possible: a career with more stability, more predictability, and more room to make choices.
Fit That Gets Better Over Time
One of the biggest factors in a great work experience is finding the right practice environment.
That is why we created VetFit, IndeVets’ work-style and clinical fit system. During onboarding, doctors complete a short profile about how they like to practice. Scheduling Coordinators use those insights, along with favorite hospitals and availability, to intentionally match doctors with hospitals where they are most likely to thrive.
Before every shift, doctors receive a personalized VetFit Brief highlighting how their work style aligns with the hospital, along with preparation tips, EMR information, and what to expect.
But the real differentiator is what happens after the shift.
After each shift, we ask doctors to complete a review. Partner hospitals do the same. That feedback is not treated like a formality. It becomes part of an ongoing conversation.
A doctor’s clinical leader reviews the feedback, provides coaching and support for the doctor, and works with the hospital, too. The goal is to keep improving the fit, the relationship, and the experience on both sides.
That is what makes this model different.
We are not just placing doctors into shifts and moving on. We are building relationships between doctors and hospitals, learning from every experience, and using those insights to make the next shift better.
Over time, that feedback loop helps doctors find practices where they feel at home, build lasting relationships there, and continue growing professionally.
Support That Travels With Doctors
While we have introduced several new enhancements over the past year, one thing has not changed: the support behind every IndeVet.
That support does not depend on a single hospital or practice. It travels with our doctors wherever they work.
Every IndeVet is paired with a Director of Clinical Excellence, a practicing veterinarian available for clinical guidance, coaching, and support.
Doctors also have access to the Clinical Collective, our 24/7 peer community in the IndeVets app where they share cases, ask questions, and help each other through the harder moments of practice.
IndeVets remains one of the few employers in veterinary medicine with a Veterinary Social Worker dedicated to supporting doctors through the unique challenges of the profession.
Veterinarians also have access to RACE-approved continuing education. Through IndeAcademy, they can participate in the IndeVets GP Certification Program and leadership development opportunities designed specifically for veterinary professionals.
Together, these resources make continuous learning, skill-building, and career development part of everyday practice, not something reserved for annual reviews or occasional CE events.
How We Change the Profession
A lot of employers in veterinary medicine say they are changing the profession.
The harder part is explaining how.
For us, it happens in the day-to-day work. It happens when a doctor gets thoughtful feedback after a shift. It happens when a hospital receives coaching that helps them better support relief veterinarians. It happens when a clinical leader helps strengthen a relationship that could have otherwise ended after one hard day.
That is where meaningful change happens.
One doctor. One hospital. One review at a time.
Most veterinarians do not want to leave the profession. They want careers they can sustain for decades. Careers that allow them to practice great medicine, continue growing, and still have room for life outside the clinic.
That is what we are building at IndeVets.
The model was always different. Now it is better, not just because of new scheduling tools or new benefits, but because we are continuing to build a career path that gives veterinarians more control, more support, and more opportunity to keep growing.
If you want to talk through whether it fits where you are right now, that conversation is always available.
